I recently helped a client that found himself in a difficult position: a marcom writing shortage.
An employee in his company gave their notice. Another employee was set to join the team, but there were five weeks before the new team member could come on board. All other team members were in the midst of a large project. And marketing and communication content writing needs … well … they don’t just go on hiatus.
I was able to fill the gap, writing four sections that need constant content updating. With access to company email and examples of previous sections to guide me, content didn’t miss a beat. Everything arrived in time to run online, complete with images. I was able to not only smoothly pass the torch to the new team member after the five weeks — but also give her a head start on her first writing deadline.
This kind of marcom writing support was executed more efficiently, of course, because I already had a relationship with this client. I needed to hit the ground running to arrange interviews, create content and format text — there really wasn’t time for introductions.
It’s a great idea to forge a link with an experienced, independent professional who can be there when you need marcom writing support. Take a look at their writing samples and what kinds of marcom work they’ve done. Talk to their references. Then, when deadlines get tight or your manpower is short, you’ve got a friend. They key is to do this outreach before you need the help, sort of like an insurance policy. Having a support person waiting in the wings gives you an edge over your competition.
